Our Shared Values and Goals
The core value of the Collaborative is that it is community-led, and focused on equity for the communities adjacent to the Anacostia River and its parks. Our goal is community-led, equitable improvement of the Anacostia River parks and adjacent neighborhoods in Wards 7 and 8, as well as a thorough cleanup of the Anacostia River.
The communities near the river, especially in Wards 7 and 8, will inform and actively participate in the work of the Anacostia Park and Community Collaborative. As such, we will necessarily prioritize the perspectives and needs of residents and other local stakeholders in planning activities and considering the impacts of our actions.
We seek to enhance the quality of life of residents and other stakeholders in communities near the river and seek environmental justice by improving transportation and access to the river and parks; removing pollutants in the Anacostia River and surrounding environment; enhancing resilience against climate change and other environmental stressors; creating a thriving schedule of meaningful events and programs; promoting healthy environments; celebrating local arts and culture; and ensuring equitable neighborhood development along the river.
We will build our own capacity, organizationally and individually, to meaningfully engage with Ward 7 and 8 residents and elevate the voices of those historically silenced or left out of decision-making.
