Living Classrooms is seeking a Kingman Rangers and Facilities Manager to supervise a staff of full-time rangers and oversee facilities for the National Capitol Region team. Apply here.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage staff of Full Time Kingman Rangers, oversee Rangers’ job skills training programs for adult and youth and volunteer programs as designed and dictated by the Director of Kingman Island.

  • Support and help coordinate recruitment, training, and day-to-day deployment procedures for Kingman Rangers and associated programming.

  • Under the direction of the Director of Kingman Island, work side by side with Kingman Rangers and volunteers to improve the Kingman and Heritage Islands Conservation Area and provide information and education to visitors.

  • Oversee facilities management, projects, and maintenance across the National Capitol Region including creating detailed plans and materials lists and coordination and management of the Rangers, Living Classrooms Staff, and Volunteers assigned to complete the work. Sites include but are not limited to stream and river trash cages, Kingman and Heritage Island, Camp Fraiser, The Dent House, and our M Street office.

Required Education, Skills and Abilities

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • 1-3 years' experience in team leadership or management.

  • Experience working with high school and post-high school youth from urban communities is a plus.

  • Experience with MS Office Suite or Google Suite.

  • Must be able to read and write basic procedural documents (some training included).

  • Commitment to working collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Willingness to lead work crews and personally do manual labor outdoors as needed in all weather conditions.

  • Physical expectations: lift up-to 50 pounds, stand for prolonged periods, and walk up to 4 miles in a day.

  • Experience using hand and power tools safely and teaching others how to do so. This candidate, with minimal support, should be able to take on basic construction or landscaping projects and create designs, materials lists, and work plans and then execute the project with both novices and experienced workers. Trail building/maintenance experience is a plus.

  • Must have a driver's license and experience driving pickup trucks. Trailer experience preferred.

  • Must be a self-starter and eager to learn.

  • Must be innovative, flexible, and quick to respond to urgent or emergency situations.

  • CPR/First Aid preferred (we can provide training).

Supervisor and Additional Information

The Kingman Ranger and Facilities Manger reports to the Director of Kingman Island and will regularly receive both informal and formal feedback on job performance. LCF-NCR’s principal office is located at 156 Q Street SW. The Kingman and Heritage Islands Conservation Area can be accessed from RFK Stadium Lot 6, off Oklahoma Avenue in northeast DC (District of Columbia). The Kingman Rangers and Facilities Manager must be able to get to/from both locations in a reliable manner.

Kingman Island is a man-made island in the Anacostia River near Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. Kingman Island south of Benning Road and the smaller adjacent Heritage Island together constitutes the District of Columbia’s Kingman and Heritage Islands Conservation Area. The DC Department of Energy and Environment has agency responsibility for the Conservation Area and Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region have helped to manage the area by means of an agreement with the DC government since 2007. The Conservation Area is open to the public and will receive more than 100,000 visits in 2020.
