Sinking boats, bikes, picnic tables part of planned Anacostia River cleanup

From The Washington Post:

Along the Anacostia River, near RFK Stadium, a row of abandoned boats that were still docked leaned into the water in what appeared to be a sinking march toward complete submersion — the last one barely visible with a cracked window peeking out from the surface.

Dockless bikes, electric scooters and picnic tables lay scattered around the watershed, along with plastic bags, alcohol containers and candy wrappers as tiny minnows darted away whenever a group of volunteers bent to retrieve some of the debris on Friday.

D.C. teachers on a boat tour of the river asked if there was any hope for the sinking boats, some with a brownish goo of algae and freshwater sponges crawling up the sides.

“Mostly not,” said Anacostia Riverkeeper Trey Sherard, guiding the educators on a morning search for birds along the banks.
