October 31: Celebrate the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, and by extension APACC member Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, is at the center of the great news: DC and Prince George's County are connected via the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail!
Until now, there was a gap in the trail between Benning Road and Bladensburg Waterfront Park. Celebrate the completion Monday, October 31. Attend the ribbon cutting at 10:00 am at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens (1550 Anacostia Ave NE). Get revved up for the ribbon cutting by participating in the Anacostia Watershed Society’s #TrickorTrails Halloween Ride.
The connection was essential. WASHCYCLE describes the missing link between DC and Maryland as "a very bike-hostile area." In the project overview, DDOT highlights the value to both DC and Maryland residents:
"By connecting Benning Road in the District with Bladensburg Waterfront Park in Bladensburg, Maryland, the four-mile segment creates new connections between communities, the river and its natural resources while enhancing recreational and educational opportunities for trail users. At the same time, the trail increases accessibility to transit stations and makes bicycle commuting more attractive by shortening travel times by as much as 30 minutes."
