WaPo: Why the Trees in my Neighborhood are Disappearing
From The Washington Post:
Welcome to my neighborhood, the 7100 block of Willow Avenue.
I’ve lived in this corner of Takoma Park, an old trolley suburb of D.C., for 34 years. I moved here for the century-old homes, weekly farmers market, quirky progressive politics and, above all, the trees. Maple, Dogwood, Holly, Spruce, Willow — our streets are named after them.
But we have lost much of that treasured foliage in recent years — especially our oldest oaks. Extreme weather is the culprit. Thirty years ago, scientists and journalists had to travel to the Arctic or to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to see the early effects of global warming. Today, its impact is visible everywhere.
