2017 East River JazzFest - Come to a performance in the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens this Sunday

Announcement: Anacostia River Sediment Project Stakeholder Meeting
Several APACC member organizations have been working with the District Department of Energy and Environment and the National Park Service to plan the first of several planned public meetings to discuss the Anacostia River Sediment Project, which will determine the future of the contaminated sediment at the bottom of the Anacostia River.
The first of these meetings has been scheudled for Wednesday, June 21st, from 10:00AM-12:00PM (registration and refreshments at 9:30AM).

A recent report flips the common narrative that says that climate change “exacerbates social and economic inequality,” and instead argues that inequality can itself drive climate change. The report, by Susan Holmberg of the Roosevelt Institute, shows that “unequal societies inflict more environmental damage than more economically even societies.”

Welcome Flotsam and Jetsam, new DC Water trash skimmers on the Anacostia!
DC Water has just named two of its newest skimmer boats "Flotsam" and "Jetsam", names selected by a competition on Twitter. We welcome the new vessels to the Anacostia River! DC Water operates these boats to pick up trash and debris from the Anacostia River. Each year, the boats pick up around 400 tons of trash.

Success! $4 million reallocated to clean up the Anacostia River in DC's 2018 budget.
Thanks to the hard work of many APACC members and other allies, the DC Council Committee on Transportation and the Environment responded to our requests during a meeting yesterday. The Committee shifted $4 million of the $5 million "missing" dollars back into the Fiscal Year 2018 budget for the Department of Energy & Environment to be able to clean up the Anacostia River and stay on schedule for completion of a remedial plan in mid-2018.

Drug Take-Back a Success – Thanks for Keeping our Parks Drug-Free
In April, we helped put the word out about the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)’s no-questions-asked drug take-back program. Drugs that aren’t disposed of property can make their way into natural water bodies like the Anacostia River if they are flushed down the toilet or dumped into the sink. MPD reports that they collected nearly 350 pounds of drugs during the month of April!
