Fairlawn Neighborhood Pushes for Rezoning to Avoid Storage Facility at the Entrance to Anacostia Park

There is a vacant property adjacent to the entrance to Anacostia Park from the Fairlawn neighborhood that is currently zoned for commercial use and is the potential location for a future Cube Storage facility. The residential neighborhood is fighting against a re-zoning request from Cube Storage to allow a commercial driveway that would make the project possible, instead arguing that the site should be zoned residential.

National Park Service Invites Neighbors to the Frederick Douglass House for the Bicentennial Weekend, Highlights Possible Traffic

The National Park Service will be hosting a weekend of events at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site on February 17th and 18th to kick of the bicentennial year of honoring 200 years of the life and legacy of Frederick Douglass “The Lion of Anacostia."The Park Service is distributing a letter that invites neighbors to attend the celebrate and highlight that the weekend may bring additional traffic to the neighborhood.

Tell the DC Council to Officially Designate 2018 as the Year of the Anacostia - and Support Groups who are Improving the Corridor

The DC Council is going to hold a hearing at 11:00am on January 11th to decide on whether to officially declare 2018 to be the Year of the Anacostia. Besides officially naming the year, you may wonder how this affects you. Well, the official resolution includes the language that says “The District of Columbia government should identify resources and policies that create opportunities for recreation within the Anacostia watershed, ensure sustainable development on and along the Anacostia River, and continue improvements to the water quality of the Anacostia River.” This could mean that groups in the Anacostia River corridor may be able to access more resources and funding to do good work in 2018.

Funding Available for Stormwater Projects and "Year of the Anacostia" Projects

DOEE's Community Stormwater Colutions Grant program provides start-up funding for community-oriented projects that improve the District’s waterways. Ideal projects should raise awareness and lead to behavior change around the impacts of stormwater runoff on the District’s water bodies. 

A special focus of this year’s grants are projects that support the “Year of the Anacostia”, which commemorates the 100 year anniversary of Anacostia Park and the many events and milestones that will be celebrated along the river in 2018.
